The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality is examining approximately 600 trees using the acoustic tomography method to protect monumental trees throughout the city and determine their health status. The study is being carried out in cooperation with Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry.

Scope of the Project and Cooperation

The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Department of Parks and Gardens has initiated a comprehensive study to determine the current conditions of monumental trees across the city.

This project is being carried out in cooperation with Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, progressing on a scientific basis.

Locations to be Examined

Approximately 600 trees located at various points of the city, particularly İzmit Cumhuriyet Boulevard and Sekapark, have been included in the scope of the examination.

These designated trees are being meticulously subjected to visual and physical inspection by expert teams.

Acoustic Tomography Method

Acoustic tomography measurements are performed on trees deemed necessary through sensors placed on the trunk.

Detailed information about the internal structure of the trunk is obtained by analyzing the propagation speed of sound waves within the tree.

Intended Goals and Reporting

This method aims to identify biological or mechanical damages such as decay, drying, and cavity formation that cannot be detected from the outside.

Technical reports to be prepared after the examinations, which are planned to last for two months, will be submitted to the relevant conservation board.
