A new study has revealed that using health warnings on social media platforms, much like those on alcohol and tobacco products, could reduce screen times among youth and raise awareness about the risks.

Main Purpose of the Research

A new study showed that pop-up windows warning about the harms of social media can help reduce social media use among young people. Researchers state that a system similar to negative impact warnings on alcohol and tobacco products could also be beneficial for social media.

Content of Warning Messages

The messages used in the study, published in JAMA Health Forum, provided information about the harmful effects of social media such as depression, anxiety, body image distortion, and disrupted sleep patterns.

Pop-up Window Method

Lead author of the study Anna Grummon stated that unlike cigarettes or alcohol, it is not possible to place the warning directly on the product, and for social media, these warnings should be designed in the form of pop-up windows.

Youth Participation and Findings

More than a thousand young people aged 13 to 29 gained a better understanding of the risks social media poses to their mental well-being after being exposed to 14 warnings regarding six health topics while scrolling through their feeds.

Most Effective Warning Topics

According to the young people's evaluations, the most effective warning messages were statements drawing attention to harms inflicted on mental health, such as depression and anxiety.
