Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demir stated in his warning to families ahead of the new academic year that heavy school bags can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain in children during their growth years.

The Burden on the Musculoskeletal System

Carrying heavy school bags for a long time can create an unnecessary burden on the musculoskeletal system of children in their growth years.

Signs of Incorrect Carrying

A child leaning forward while carrying the bag, lifting their shoulders up, or experiencing a change in gait is considered an indicator that the bag is too heavy.

The Danger of Carrying on a Single Shoulder

Bags carried on a single shoulder cause the load to fall on only one side of the body, creating pain and muscle fatigue in the back, waist, neck, and shoulder regions.

Proper Bag Characteristics

The bag being of a size appropriate to the child's age and body structure, and being used on both shoulders with wide and supported straps, ensures a balanced distribution of the load.

Placement and Daily Routine

Course materials that will not be used every day should be removed from the bag, heavy items should be placed close to the back, and knees should be bent when lifting the bag.

Expert Evaluation

It is urged that back, waist, neck, or shoulder pains that persist even after the bag is removed should definitely not be ignored and an expert evaluation should be sought.
