Hypertension and diabetes screening to be included in health insurance coverage

A new draft prepared by the Ministry of Health envisions expanding the scope of health insurance benefits starting in 2030 to cover the costs of hypertension and diabetes screening.
Health insurance coverage is expanding
The Ministry of Health proposes that, starting in 2030, health insurance should not only cover post-diagnosis and treatment, but also include screenings for hypertension and diabetes. This important step is included in the draft decree prepared to increase the level and scope of insurance benefits.
Roadmap and preparation phase
According to the draft decree expected to take effect on April 1, 2027, the period until 2030 is considered a preparation phase for the development of special regulations. During this period, priority risk groups, eligibility criteria, and payment rates will be determined.
Disease rates and diagnosis problems in the country
In Vietnam, approximately 7 million people suffer from diabetes, a figure that has multiplied compared to the past, yet the majority of patients are unaware of their condition. Research shows that hypertension rates among adults are also at very high levels.
Other diseases to be covered
Within the scope of the draft, it is proposed to cover screening costs not only for hypertension and diabetes, but also for various common types of cancer, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and cervical, breast, lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancers.
