Millions of Screenings Conducted Under the National Cancer Control Program
As a result of the efforts carried out within the framework of October 1-31 Breast Cancer Awareness Month, early diagnosis opportunities were provided to thousands of people across the country.
According to the statement made by the Ministry, 5.1 million people underwent free breast cancer screenings in the last two years within the scope of the National Cancer Control Program.
Breast Cancer Data in Turkey
Breast cancer is known as the most common type of cancer among women in Turkey and worldwide. Approximately 32,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the country every year.
Official statements indicate that the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is approximately 1 in every 16 women.
Free Screening and Examination Processes
Within the framework of the National Cancer Control Program, free screening services are provided for the early detection of breast cancer.
As a result of screenings conducted over the past two years, approximately 300,000 suspicious findings were detected, and citizens were directed to healthcare institutions for further examination.
Cases Diagnosed at an Early Stage
As a result of the screenings carried out, approximately 21,000 citizens were diagnosed with breast cancer, ensuring the detection of the disease at an early stage.
Thus, a critical step was taken to initiate treatment processes for patients at an early stage.
Centers Where Screenings Are Performed
Screenings are conducted through various health units such as KETEM (Cancer Early Diagnosis, Screening and Education Center), SHM (Healthy Life Center), Mobile Cancer Screening Vehicles, TSM (Community Health Center), and ASM (Family Health Center).
Operating nationwide, 493 KETEMs offer free cancer screening and awareness services to citizens.
The Role of Mobile Screening Vehicles
In order to reach broader masses with cancer screening services, 60 mobile KETEM vehicles are in service across Turkey.
A total of 570,000 screening services have been provided to citizens so far through mobile cancer screening vehicles.
