Universities warned to review research links with China

UK security service MI5 has warned that academic research involving the China General Technology Research Institute could serve Chinese intelligence.

Background of the MI5 Warning

The UK security service MI5 has found that over a hundred UK-linked academics have contributed to projects funded by China's civilian intelligence and security services. In an announcement made on September 30, it was stated that the institution in question has very strong ties to the Chinese Ministry of State Security.

It was stated that the primary objective of the institution is to fund academic research that will directly enhance the technical espionage capacity of the Ministry of State Security. It was also emphasized that some academics may not be aware of this funding.

Legal Risks and Criminal Proceedings

This warning means that if universities continue their ties with the institution, they could face criminal investigations on charges of assisting a foreign state. Universities are required to take necessary precautions in accordance with offenses under the National Security Act 2023.

Related Research Areas

Security Minister Dan Jarvis exposed attempts by Chinese intelligence agencies to use British academic research to undermine national security. Projects funded by the institution include critical topics such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, covert communication systems, and steganography.

China's Response

The Chinese Embassy in London rejected MI5's allegations, describing them as entirely imaginary and fabricated. The embassy urged British authorities to stop spreading slander and undermining educational exchanges.
