Mobilization of Health Teams Continues After Ship Accident Off Kyrenia

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus stated that healthcare workers acted with a rapid mobilization mindset following the ship accident that occurred off Kyrenia on August 30. To date, 13 people have lost their lives in the accident, while search operations for 15 missing individuals are ongoing.

First Response Process of Health Teams

Following the maritime accident off Kyrenia, healthcare workers mobilized with a great sense of mobilization from the very first minutes. Under the coordination of the Ministry of Health, 21 ambulances and 63 personnel were swiftly dispatched to the port, while 25 doctors and 30 nurses began initial interventions at the scene.

Simultaneous Alarm Status of Hospitals

State, university, military, and private hospitals were simultaneously put on high alert immediately after the accident. All 239 passengers rescued alive from the accident were transferred to hospitals and underwent necessary examinations and health checks.

Status of Treated Accident Victims

Of the 132 accident victims hospitalized for advanced examinations and treatment, 131 were discharged as of September 5. There are no accident victims receiving treatment in intensive care, and the health condition of the only person still receiving inpatient treatment is rapidly improving.

Psychosocial Support and Search Operations

Teams consisting of 19 psychiatry specialists and 17 clinical psychologists who served throughout the process provided support to the accident victims as well as to the relatives of those who lost their lives and those who are missing. While the number of people who lost their lives in the accident reached 13, search operations for the 15 missing persons are continuing uninterrupted on a 24/7 basis.
