While approximately 27,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Turkey, experts emphasized the importance of early diagnosis in the fight against the disease within the scope of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and shared seven key symptoms to watch out for.

A Disease Affecting Thousands of Women Annually

According to Ministry of Health data, approximately 27,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Turkey. This clearly demonstrates how vital regular screening and awareness are across society.

Awareness Month Warnings from an Expert

Making important statements on the occasion of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Prof. Dr. Metin Çakmakçı, Head of the Acıbadem Ataşehir Breast Center and General Surgery Specialist, drew attention to the critical role of early diagnosis in the treatment process.

Suspicious Lumps Appearing in the Breast

At the top of the seven symptoms listed by Prof. Dr. Metin Çakmakçı is a newly developed lump in the breast. In the presence of such lumps, it is necessary to consult a specialist physician without wasting time.

Shape, Size, and Skin Changes

Changes occurring in the shape or size of the breast, as well as findings such as dimpling, retraction, or noticeable thickening of the breast skin, are among the other important symptoms to pay attention to.

Changes Related to the Nipple

Inward turning of the nipple or newly developing changes, along with spontaneous discharge from the nipple, are also evaluated among the early signs of the disease.

Findings of Redness and Rash

Redness, rash, or other skin alterations emerging around the breast or nipple are indicated among the other clinical symptoms that women should not ignore.

Swelling in and Around the Armpit

New swellings appearing in the armpit or around the collarbone are among the possible manifestations of breast cancer in the body and must be closely monitored.

Risk Groups and Early Evaluation

Metin Çakmakçı stated that it is of vital importance, especially for women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to have a risk assessment performed at much earlier ages.
