Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Büyükkoyuncu Pekel drew attention to the prevalence of the disease and shared ways of protection in statements made on the occasion of Alzheimer's Awareness Day.

Prevalence and Symptoms of the Disease

Alzheimer's, the most common cause of dementia, is seen more frequently especially in individuals aged 65 and over. It is estimated that there are around 500,000 patients across Turkey.

In the early stages of the disease, conditions such as mixing up the places of objects or having difficulty remembering daily tasks can be observed.

Effects of Advanced Stages

Over time, advanced memory problems such as difficulty recognizing the names of relatives and the person forgetting their own age or name may emerge.

The process deeply affects not only memory, but also sleep patterns, eating habits, and behavioral patterns.

Behavioral Changes

Various behavioral symptoms such as irritability, stubbornness, restlessness, and occasionally hallucinations can also be observed in the later stages of the disease.

Course of the Treatment Process

Currently, there is no definitive treatment that completely eliminates the disorder, but some methods applied in the early period can slow down the rate of progression.

Habits That Reduce Risk

Experts recommend adopting three fundamental lifestyle habits in particular to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.
