The Cyprus Turkish Physicians Union reacted to the situation by emphasizing that instead of filling management positions in the public health system through merit and examinations, the Ministry of Health makes political appointments.

Deficiencies in Management Positions

The Executive Board of the Cyprus Turkish Physicians Union stated that a significant portion of the management positions within the public health system under the Ministry of Health are not being filled as stipulated by the laws.

Organizational Structure of the Ministry of Health

The statement noted that the Ministry of Health of the TRNC consists of the Inpatient Treatment Institutions, Primary Health Services, Pharmacy and Medicines, State Laboratory, and Health Services departments.

Emphasis on Merit and Examination Basis

It was noted that, in accordance with the structure defined by the laws, department directors and chief physicians must be appointed by the Public Service Commission through examinations and on the basis of merit.

Temporary and Political Assignments

It was reported that the Chief Physician of the Inpatient Treatment Institutions Department was prevented from performing their duties and that none of the five state hospitals have a chief physician appointed through examinations.

Triple Decree and Electoral Process

Drawing attention to the fact that a new undersecretary was appointed via a triple decree with only days remaining until the elections, the rationale behind this appointment was questioned.

Call to the Government

The Union invited the government and the Minister of Health to manage the health system based on merit, law, and scientific principles rather than political loyalty.
