New rules from Egypt regarding children's social media use

The Egyptian administration announced that, upon the instructions of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, it has implemented comprehensive new legal regulations aimed at protecting children and youth from the risks of social media platforms.

New Age Limits and Restrictions

According to the statement by the Egyptian Cabinet, within the framework of the new regulation, social media platforms will not be able to create, activate, or allow independent personal accounts for children under the age of 13, nor will they allow these individuals to use an account.

Safe Mode and Age Verification

Users between the ages of thirteen and fifteen will be able to open a social media account, but Safe Mode will be automatically and mandatorily activated on these accounts. Platforms will take measures to verify users' ages and keep data to a minimum.

Implementation Schedule and Process

Egypt's relevant institutions granted social media platforms a period of three months to implement the conditions in the decision, and requested that they submit a technical and operational implementation plan within thirty days from the notification of the decision.

Similar Steps Globally

This regulation came to the agenda at a time when measures for the protection of minors in the digital environment are being increased worldwide. Approximately twenty countries globally have taken or announced similar steps.
