In Mersin, 4 out of 5 suspects detained in an operation against a gang that blackmailed citizens and generated illicit gains by setting up private image traps through fake social media accounts were arrested.

Operation Details and Coordination

Acting under the coordination of the Erdemli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams placed the gang targeting citizens with fake social media profiles under technical surveillance.

Seized Evidence and Detentions

Security forces conducting simultaneous raids on addresses detained 5 suspects. Mobile phones, SIM cards, identity cards, and synthetic drugs were seized during the searches.

During the searches conducted on the suspects and at their residences, 9 mobile phones, 3 SIM cards, 2 identity cards belonging to other persons, and 32 synthetic drug substances were found.

Judicial Process and Court Decisions

Referenced to the courthouse after procedures at the gendarmerie, 4 of the 5 suspects were arrested by the duty magistrate and sent to prison, while a judicial control decision was issued for the other suspect.

Warnings from Authorities to Citizens

Authorities warned citizens not to share private images with individuals met in the virtual environment. They urged caution against similar fraud attempts.
