Thomas Reis, the new head coach of Trabzonspor, has taken the title of the thirteenth foreign manager in the history of the claret-blue club. To date, the club has brought in numerous foreign names from Germany, Belgium, England, and other countries to lead the team.
Foreign Managers in Club History
Trabzonspor signed German Jürgen Sunderman as its first foreign manager in the 1985-86 season. During this process, Werner Biskup, Urbain Braems, Georges Leekens, Gordon Milne, Hans Peter Briegel, Vahid Halilhodzic, Sebastiao Lazaroni, Hugo Broos, Shota Arveladze, Eddie Newton, and Nenad Bjelica served in the role.
The Prominence of German Managers
Thomas Reis became the fourth German manager to serve in the claret-blue team, following Sunderman, Biskup, and Briegel. While the team has appointed the highest number of head coaches from Germany, this country was followed by Belgium and others.
No Championship Joy Experienced with Foreign Managers
Trabzonspor achieved all seven of its Süper Lig championships in history under the management of domestic head coaches. The claret-bludes reached the happy ending in the league under the management of Ahmet Suat Özyazıcı, Özkan Sümer, and Abdullah Avcı.
Those Who Served During Ertuğrul Doğan's Tenure
Agreements were reached with six different head coaches during the tenure of club president Ertuğrul Doğan, who took office in March 2023. While Orhan Ak, Nenad Bjelica, Abdullah Avcı, Şenol Güneş, and Fatih Tekke served, Reis became the sixth head coach of this period.
