UEFA disciplinary investigation against Fenerbahçe following incidents in Lyon match
Following the tension after the Champions League play-off round, UEFA has launched an investigation into Fenerbahçe players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood.
The on-field and tunnel tensions that occurred after Fenerbahçe eliminated Lyon away to advance to the Champions League league stage have been brought to the UEFA Disciplinary Committee. The investigation process initiated over the incidents involving Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood is being evaluated by sports lawyers.
Disciplinary process and potential penalties
Sports lawyer Anıl Dinçer stated that Matteo Guendouzi's gestures towards the stands could be considered unsposmanlike conduct and carry a risk of at least a 1-match ban.
It was stated that the brawl in the tunnel could lead to a ban of 3 to 5 matches on the grounds of assault, and that UEFA will make its decision in light of VAR footage and official reports.
Security vulnerability on the Lyon side
It was emphasized that the situation is more serious for the host Olympique Lyon, and that an unaccredited person entering the tunnel and making physical contact constitutes an organizational failure.
It is anticipated that this security vulnerability could bring heavy fines and partial or full stadium closure sanctions for the Lyon club.
Defense strategy and unjust provocation
In the defense of the Fenerbahçe players, insults from Lyon fans and security deficiencies at the end of the match are expected to be used as elements of unjust provocation.
