A new study conducted on the health data of approximately 65,000 people in the UK has revealed that sugar consumption in the first two years of life, starting from the womb, may be linked to health outcomes in adulthood.
Taking advantage of the sugar rationing period implemented in the UK after World War II, scientists examined the effects of early childhood nutrition in adulthood and analyzed the records of individuals born between 1951 and 1956.
Reduction in Cancer Risk
According to the results of the study, individuals who spent the first two years of their lives with lower sugar consumption were found to have a lower risk of developing certain types of cancer in adulthood.
The study stated that low sugar consumption reduced the risk of liver cancer by 69% and breast cancer by 36%, while similar results were reported for prostate, rectal, and lung cancers.
Impact on Cellular Aging
Researchers found that individuals who consumed less sugar in early childhood had greater telomere lengths.
It was stated that this difference in telomeres, which is considered a significant indicator of biological aging, corresponds to approximately two years of slower aging at the cellular level.
Dietary Habits and Long-Term Outcomes
The research team pointed out that dietary habits formed during infancy and early childhood can persist in later years.
The study noted that individuals who consumed less sugar at a young age tended to consume less sugar in their 50s and maintained more balanced dietary habits.

Researchers emphasized that the results obtained do not mean sugar should be completely banned during childhood.
It was stated that limiting sugar consumption in the first two years, when organ development and metabolic structure are shaped, could be important for long-term health.
