Positron AI, a startup developing chips to run artificial intelligence models, raised $875 million in its latest funding round, bringing its valuation to $5 billion within seven months.

Funding Round and Valuation Increase

Positron AI announced on Thursday that it raised $875 million in a new funding round and that its company valuation more than quadrupled over seven months to reach $5 billion.

According to data provider PitchBook, the company had secured $230 million in capital at a valuation of $1.06 billion in February.

Market Competition and Chip Market

The rapidly growing AI inference market, which focuses on running trained artificial intelligence models, has turned into a major competitive arena as companies develop custom processors to challenge Nvidia's market dominance.

Funding Tranches and Leaders

The financing was split into two stages; led by NEA and Jim Clark, a Series C of $375 million and a Series C-1 of up to $500 million were executed at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation.

The investment round was co-led by NEA, Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, Andra Capital, SemiAnalysis Capital, and Silicon Graphics founder Jim Clark.

Participating Investors

Prominent institutions such as the Qatar Investment Authority, Cisco Investments, and Naver Ventures also participated in the funding round as additional investors.

Next-Generation Asimov Chip

The funds provided will be used to finance the final design phase of the company's next-generation chip, Asimov, with production targeted to begin in the second half of 2027.

Titan and Atlas Systems

The company stated that its AI inference system called Titan will combine four to eight Asimov chips to serve models exceeding 16 trillion parameters and context windows beyond 10 million tokens in a single node.

Additionally, Positron announced that it has deployed over 50 racks of Atlas, its first-generation inference system, on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Board of Directors Changes

As part of the financing agreement, Forest Baskett from NEA, Gavin Baker from Atreides Management, SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel, and Thomas Jermoluk from Jim Clark Office joined Positron's board of directors.
