AI anxiety comes to Telluride, with Bill Gates sounding the alarm

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, speaking at events during the Telluride Film Festival, drew attention to the existential risks brought by the rapid development of artificial intelligence, stating that it could be the biggest problem humanity faces.

AI Agenda at the Film Festival

Although the Telluride Film Festival traditionally serves as a refuge from the outside world, this year it hosted existential anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence. Breaking from its usual stance, the festival management evaluated artificial intelligence as a threat and invited participants to engage with the development process of this technology.

The Dilemma of Humanity Presentation

A multimedia presentation titled "The Dilemma of Humanity" was held at the festival with the participation of Center for Humane Technology founders Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, artist Joy Mauthe, and violinist Andrei Matorin. The presentation emphasized that the race to develop powerful artificial intelligence is progressing too fast for governments and the public to keep up with, and control could be lost.

Among Bill Gates's Priorities

Microsoft founder Bill Gates stated that, alongside his efforts in global health and the fight against poverty, he has identified artificial intelligence as a new and primary area of concern. Noting that artificial intelligence is developing faster than expected, Gates expressed that he felt a compulsion to issue warnings on the matter.

Five Core Areas of Concern

Bill Gates outlined five broad areas of concern: the labor market, biotechnology, cyberattacks, psychosocial harms, and whether humanity can maintain control over the systems. He noted that the systems have reached superhuman levels in writing code.

Call to Slow Down Development

In response to questions about whether development should be slowed down, Gates stated that, despite the challenges of the competition between the US and China, he would likely support a reliable plan to slow or pause it. He emphasized that the upcoming five-year period is critical for managing the risks.
