A comprehensive study conducted at Binghamton University in the USA revealed that constantly recording visuals through smartphones negatively impacts human memory and makes it harder to recall the details of memories.

Details of the Research

In seven different experiments conducted with 892 participants by Binghamton University researchers, the effects of smartphone use on human memory were examined in detail.

During the experiments, it was clearly determined that individuals who photographed or took screenshots of a memory had more difficulty remembering the details of that event.

Experiments with Works of Art

Within the scope of the study, participants were shown various works of art and some were asked to simply look at the pictures.

Participants in the other group were asked to take screenshots of the works and the results were compared.

It was determined that individuals who only looked at the visuals remembered the pictures more accurately and in greater detail compared to those who took screenshots.

Expert Statements

Psychologist Sophia Fabrizio, the lead author of the study, made evaluations regarding the findings obtained.

Fabrizio stated that there is a high probability of harming the memory of experiences and information by pressing a single button.

What Is Cognitive Load Offloading

Experts reported that this situation is called cognitive load offloading in the scientific world.

When the brain knows that a piece of information is stored via a photo, it can reduce the effort it spends to encode that information into memory.

Distraction of Attention

Researchers emphasize that directing attention to the screen while taking photos prevents focusing on the moment.

It is stated that trying to take constant photos, especially during special moments, can cause what is experienced to remain fainter in memory.
