A conducted study compared the digital hygiene habits of smartphone and computer users. The results revealed that mobile device owners are more attentive to keeping their devices updated and deleting unnecessary apps, but fundamental security measures are neglected in both groups.

Update Habits Compared

The research revealed that smartphone users are significantly more proactive in keeping their devices updated compared to computer users.

While 77 percent of mobile users regularly update their operating system and applications, this rate remains at only 53 percent among computer users.

File Management and Organization Differences

User habits regarding media and file management vary depending on the device type. 72 percent of smartphone users regularly manage or delete their photos and videos.

While photo management is at 49 percent among computer users, the rate of organizing files and emails into folders rises to 57 percent.

Removal of Unused Applications

A similar picture is seen in the deletion of unused software. 73 percent of smartphone owners remove apps they rarely use from their devices.

The rate of deleting unused software among computer users is measured at only 47 percent.

Importance of Cleanup for Security

Security experts point out that removing old or unnecessary applications on computers is of great importance in terms of device performance and security.

Unnecessary software accumulating over time decreases system performance while also housing sensitive data that could be exploited by cyber attackers.

Security Maintenance Rates Low

It is observed that the proportion of those who regularly perform security-related maintenance practices is quite low in both user groups.

33 percent of mobile users and 31 percent of computer users regularly change their passwords, and backup rates similarly remain low.

Impact of Device Usage Purposes

The differences in maintenance habits between computers and mobile devices largely stem from the different usage purposes of these devices.

While mobile phones are predominantly used for communication and media consumption, computers maintain their importance for file management and business processes.
