Giant kelp forests discovered in the tropical waters of the Galapagos
A new habitat belonging to a giant kelp species that normally prefers cold climates has been uncovered in the tropical waters of the equatorial belt.
During deep-sea research in the tropical waters of the Galapagos Islands, giant kelp forests belonging to the species Eisenia galapagensis, which are normally found only in cold and temperate climates, have been identified.
Surprising discovery in deep-sea research
While examining seamounts in the region with a remotely operated underwater vehicle, researchers encountered dense kelp at a depth of approximately 50 meters. Detailed analyses clarified that this giant kelp forest stretches between depths of 50 and 70 meters.
The fundamental detail that makes the discovery extraordinary is that such giant kelp forests are generally found in cold and temperate waters. The presence of such a dense population in the tropical waters of the equatorial belt has generated great interest in the scientific world.
Vital importance for the marine ecosystem
Kelp forests create a critical natural habitat for numerous marine creatures, much like forests on land.
Various fish species and other marine organisms use these rich areas for feeding, hiding, and breeding. In this context, kelp forests are considered indispensable ecosystems for the preservation of marine biodiversity.
Cold currents support life
Although the Galapagos Islands are generally located in a tropical geography, cold and nutrient-rich ocean currents are active in certain parts of the region.
Scientists evaluate that these special conditions created by the aforementioned currents make it possible for large kelp, which normally prefer cooler waters, to survive in the tropical region.
Suspicion of a new species and confirmation of identity
Researchers originally aimed to examine the species Eisenia galapagensis, which was first recorded in 1934 and is endemic to the Galapagos. Upon reaching the forest in deep waters, however, kelp different from known specimens was encountered.
Although the fact that the found kelp was almost twice as large as normal specimens raised suspicions of a new species, current data from the Charles Darwin Foundation confirmed that these plants are a form of the known species.
