WIPO Technology SPARK Report
The WIPO Technology SPARK report examines sports innovation through the lens of intellectual property analytics. Between 2016 and 2025, sports-related patent applications realized a compound annual growth rate of 7.6%, compared to a 4.4% increase across all patents. While trademarks increased by 6.1%, sports-related design applications grew at an annual rate of 8.3%.

Intellectual property activities vary significantly among sports disciplines. Golf and swimming stand out as the sports with the most intense intellectual property activity in terms of patents, trademarks, and designs. Geographically, Asia holds a dominant position in sports-related intellectual property activities.
Research-Oriented Model in Para Sports
The fact that 26% of patents in para sports originate from academic institutions, compared to a rate of 17% in general sports technologies, points to a more research-oriented and collaborative innovation model.
