Google and Constellation have signed a comprehensive 20-year nuclear energy agreement covering 890 megawatts of new energy capacity.

Details and Financing of the Agreement

Constellation will spend more than $4.3 billion to construct the new facility.

The resulting 890 megawatts of new energy capacity will be connected to the PJM Interconnection grid, the largest transmission operator in the U.S.

Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear Energy

The boom in artificial intelligence technologies has revived interest in nuclear resources, which produce zero emissions and provide uninterrupted 24-hour energy.

Amazon.com also took a similar step last week, agreeing to purchase 690 megawatts of electricity from the Calvert Cliffs facility in Maryland.

Tech Companies' Nuclear Moves

Google already has other agreements with nuclear energy producers and signed a contract with NextEra Energy last year.

Microsoft, meanwhile, agreed in 2024 to source electricity from the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant.

The Global Return of Nuclear Energy

Nuclear energy, which was previously moved away from due to cost overruns and safety risks, has caught a renewed global upward trend in recent years.

In line with rising data center demands and emission reduction targets, countries and tech giants continue to turn toward nuclear energy.
