New mite species discovered in Kastamonu and given a historical name
As a result of scientific studies conducted in Kastamonu, a new mite species was discovered and introduced to the international literature.
Following field studies conducted in cooperation with Kastamonu University and the Russian Academy of Sciences, a new mite species previously unknown to the scientific world was identified and recorded.
Field Studies and Discovery Process
New specimens were obtained during field surveys carried out in the Daday district by Dr. Cihan Cılbırcıoğlu, Head of the Department of Plant and Animal Production at Kastamonu University.
International Academic Partnership
Detailed taxonomic examinations were conducted jointly with the Russian Academy of Sciences on the obtained specimens, with Dr. Vasily Kolesnikov among the researchers contributing to the study.
Name Given to the New Species
Classified according to international rules, the new species was named Kunstidamaeus oaphlagonicus sp. nov., with this name being associated with the region's ancient history.
Reference to Ancient Paphlagonia
The designation oaphlagonicus given to the species serves as a direct reference to the ancient region of Paphlagonia, where the province of Kastamonu is also located.
Publication in a Scientific Journal
The scientific article co-authored by the research team was published in the May 2026 issue of Systematic & Applied Acarology, one of the respected publication organs of the field.
