Oregon Becomes the Latest State to Take Action on Artificial Intelligence Regulations
While the federal government maintains a cautious approach, states continue to introduce their own artificial intelligence oversight mechanisms.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed a new executive order establishing security standards for state agencies in artificial intelligence procurement. Thus, Oregon has joined states such as California and New York in initiating artificial intelligence regulations.
New Executive Order Signed by the Governor's Office
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek officially signed executive order number 26-26 on Wednesday, establishing responsible artificial intelligence procurement standards for the state government.
This step parallels the legal oversight policies pursued by states such as California and New York to compensate for the lack of regulation at the federal level.
Mandatory Independent Security Reviews
Under the enacted order, while supporting artificial intelligence innovations, the state will also purchase models that have undergone independent third-party security reviews in accordance with the law.
State Chief Information Officer Terrence Woods has been tasked with developing adequate third-party review criteria for artificial intelligence security and will submit an implementation proposal to the governor's office within ninety days.
Key Security Criteria and Evaluations
The implementation proposal to be prepared will include formulating an artificial intelligence definition suitable for state procurements and evaluating the feasibility of an emergency stop mechanism for the models.
In addition, specific processes will be established to integrate artificial intelligence security reviews into the state's procurement, contracting, and technology use processes.
Legislative Efforts of Other States
While the state of California has signed bills on security risk assessments and artificial intelligence auditors into law, New York is advancing transparency standards.
These legislative moves at the state level aim to ensure that artificial intelligence technologies are used safely and in a controlled manner in the public sphere.
