As production limits are reached in traditional oil and gas fields, Petrovietnam has decided to specialize in core technologies and pivot toward new areas such as clean hydrogen, green chemicals, and the data economy. While developing strategic product projects, the company is implementing innovations such as digital twin, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing technologies.

Strategic Objectives and Transformation Decisions

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Sy, Head of the Science, Technology, and Digital Transformation Department at the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Group, announced the development targets. Petrovietnam aims to maintain double-digit revenue growth and enter the Fortune Global 500 list.

The group aims for at least 25% of consolidated revenue to come from new products, services, and technological innovations, and for the economic efficiency generated from science and technology to double the total investment cost.

New Product and Technology Focus Areas

Because growth potential in traditional production areas has reached its limit, Petrovietnam has decided to focus on areas such as clean hydrogen, green chemicals, new materials, and the data economy.

In this direction, the company has identified 34 strategic products, prioritizing the adoption of high technology from developed countries and the purchase of technology licenses. Member units are implementing digital twin technology.

Green Chemicals and Nanographene Studies

Petrovietnam is conducting research on green chemicals such as sustainable aviation fuels, green fuels, biomethanol, and green methanol.

Conducting R&D studies on nanographene in the field of advanced materials, the company has commercialized two products: nanographene-additive lubricants and high-durability graphene paint.

R&D, Autonomous Vehicles, and Artificial Intelligence Applications

Research is being conducted to improve the oil recovery factor in oil and natural gas exploration and production, and an autonomous underwater vehicle has been produced with plans to market 5 devices in 2026.

Artificial intelligence has been applied to geological research in the Block B project, and smart drilling technology is planned to be commissioned. In addition, the production of 3D printing ink for metal materials has been decided.

Ministry Decisions and Future Projects

Under the Decision dated September 4, 2026, by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, 35 special product projects were assigned to Petrovietnam.

In the upcoming period, the company will focus on developing a digital mirror platform, applying artificial intelligence, and researching the technology chain for green hydrogen production and blending.

Regulatory Barriers and Requested Policies

Obstacles such as the lack of a controlled testing legal framework that allows the testing of new technologies and the shortage of independent domestic organizations are being experienced.

The company is requesting policies and special mechanisms from the government that mandate the replacement of fossil fuels with green energy in sectors requiring emission reductions.
