At the Biomedical Engineering Department of Karabük University, an economical and portable project that enables the control of computers and devices using brain signals has been successfully completed.

Development Process of the Project

The TÜBİTAK-supported project led by Dr. Abdullah Bilal Aygün, a faculty member in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Karabük University, has been completed.

The project, which began studies last year and is titled 'Design and Application of Innovative and Adaptable Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials', focuses on SSVEP signals.

Targeted Use Areas

The project specifically aims to improve the quality of life for ALS patients and individuals who cannot use their striated muscles.

Thanks to this system, individuals will be able to control a wheelchair, type on a computer screen, or communicate their basic requests directly through brain signals.

Working Mechanism of the System

The system works on the principle that letters on a computer screen flash at different frequencies and the frequency of the letter the user focuses on appears in the back lobe of the brain.

Upon detecting this generated signal, the command focused on by the person is quickly perceived and reflected on the screen.

Cost Advantage and Tests

While similar hardware costs between 200 and 300 dollars on the market, this developed portable system cost only 50 dollars.

The project was tested on 10 volunteers, and the obtained data was analyzed and submitted to an academic journal.
