Stony lands at Bingöl University are being transformed into orchards through smart agriculture
Bingöl University is converting non-arable stony lands into modern orchards using smart irrigation systems and sensors.
In line with its development goals in agriculture and livestock, Bingöl University has begun transforming non-arable stony lands into model orchards by equipping them with smart technology.
Aim and Scope of the Project
A new project was prepared in line with the university's target of becoming the Silicon Valley in Agriculture and Livestock, aiming to bring non-arable lands into production and establish model orchards.
Different Fruit Species Being Tested
Within the scope of the project, fruit saplings belonging to twenty different species were planted in a 30-dunam section of the approximately 700-dunam area in the first phase.
Ten different species—including olives, kiwi, cornelian cherry, blueberries, figs, pomegranates, loquats, pistachios, aronia, and hazelnuts—are being tested in the city for the first time with this project.
Smart Irrigation and Sensor Technology
High efficiency is targeted in the model orchard by using a smart irrigation system that operates entirely on solar energy.
Thanks to sensors placed underground, moisture levels are measured in real time, and irrigation is started automatically based on the obtained data.
Remote Monitoring and Water Conservation
The solar-powered system includes eight stations and control valves connected to them.
The advanced irrigation system prevents unnecessary water consumption by accurately determining the amount of water the tree needs, and the system can be monitored remotely.
Pilot University Vision
Rector Prof. Dr. Erdal Çelik recalled that the university was selected as a pilot university in the field of Agriculture and Basin-Based Development, stating that this work was implemented with the vision of a next-generation university.
Budget and Targeted Contributions
Dr. Orhan İnik, who is involved in the project, stated that the project, which has a budget of approximately 3,004,000 liras, aims to serve as an example for farmers and students in the region.
