Strategic Raw Material Produced with Zero Waste from Potassium Feldspar Ore
Thanks to the EU-supported POTASSIAL project, potassium feldspar ore, used in the glass and ceramics industry, was processed using a waste-free method and brought into the industry.
Within the scope of the EU-supported POTASSIAL project, the potassium feldspar ore used by the glass and ceramics sector was processed with a zero-waste approach and transformed into strategic raw materials such as alumina, potassium chloride, quartz, and silicon carbide.
Scope and Supporters of the Project
The POTASSIAL project, accepted within the framework of the European Union Horizon 2020 ERA-MIN3 2021 Call Program, has been successfully completed. The study was supported by TÜBİTAK and Inönü University.
Stakeholders Involved in the Project
Prof. Dr. Murat Erdemoğlu, a faculty member at Inönü University's Department of Mining Engineering, coordinated the project, which involved numerous academic and industrial institution partners.
Fırat University, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Luleå University of Technology, Element Six Inc., and ETİ Alüminyum AŞ took part in the project.
Zero Waste and Produced Raw Materials
The study ensured the prevention of waste generated during the processing of potassium feldspar ore. Significant outputs were obtained by evaluating the different components of the ore.
As a result of this process, alumina, potassium chloride, quartz, and silicon carbide used in the abrasive industry were produced, proving the economic and technical feasibility of the project.
Place in Scientific Literature
The successful results obtained and the scientific studies conducted regarding the project also found resonance internationally. Research within this scope was published in the American Chemical Society's journal, ACS Omega.
