Syracuse University has announced the establishment of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, uniting world-class researchers across the campus to advance rapidly expanding work in the field of artificial intelligence.
Leadership Team
The institute is led by Paulo Shakarian, the KG Tan Foundation Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, while Johannes Himmelreich serves as associate director and vice chair of the executive committee.

This new structure unites faculty members from four schools and colleges with expertise in diverse fields such as engineering, information sciences, public policy, and communication.
Research Focus Areas
Research within the institute is organized into four core areas: artificial intelligence and security, multi-domain intelligence, socio-cognitive dynamics of artificial intelligence, and artificial intelligence for governance and policy.
Community and Event Activities
The institute will engage with the broader artificial intelligence community through public events, lectures, workshops, and symposia, including a workshop funded by the Army Research Office and the METACOG-26 AAAI Symposium on Artificial Metacognition.
