Turkey's 2025 Cultural Heritage and Museum Statistics Announced
The number of visitors to museums and archaeological sites across Turkey increased in 2025.
According to the 2025 cultural heritage data shared by the Turkish Statistical Institute, both the total number of museums in the country and the number of visitors to these museums recorded an increase.
Number and Distribution of Museums
The number of museums in Turkey increased by 4.4 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching 664. Of these museums, 220 operated under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
While there were 426 institutions in the private museum category, the number of museums serving under the Presidency of National Palaces was recorded as 18.
Status of Artifacts in Collections
The total number of artifacts preserved in museums increased by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 4,012,294.
While coins and archaeological materials constituted the majority of the artifacts in museums affiliated with the Ministry, the distribution of artifacts within private museums and National Palaces was also included in the statistics.
Visitor Statistics
The number of visitors to museums and archaeological sites increased by 6.8 percent in 2025, reaching a total of 65,862,639 people.
A 52.9 percent portion of visitors preferred museums and archaeological sites affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Visitor Distribution by Provinces
The highest number of museum visitors was concentrated in metropolitan cities, with Istanbul ranking first.
Istanbul was followed by the provinces of Izmir and Ankara, respectively, placing them among the centers hosting the most visitors.
Immovable Cultural Properties and Protected Areas
The number of immovable cultural properties in the country increased by 2.6 percent compared to the previous year to 130,632.
While the total number of protected areas increased by 6 percent to 27,703, the vast majority of these areas consisted of archaeological sites.
National Parks and Conservation Areas
The number of national parks increased by 2 percent in 2025 to reach 50, and the total national park area expanded.
While the number of nature parks rose to 274, the numbers of nature conservation areas and natural monuments remained unchanged compared to the previous year.
