Following the cancellation of thousands of flights across the UK due to a technical failure at the Swanwick centre, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has demanded a report from Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe within a week and launched an independent review.
Major Disruption to Transport
The technical fault at the Swanwick centre caused thousands of flight cancellations across the UK and severely disrupted the travel plans of hundreds of thousands of passengers.
This latest incident was recorded as the third major flight suspension case in just over three years.
Ministry Launches Investigation
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that she does not believe the problem was inevitable and requested an independent review by the Civil Aviation Authority.
Minister Alexander emphasized that no stone would be left unturned regarding the incident and that necessary steps would be taken to reduce the likelihood of a similar situation recurring.
Deadline Given to Executive for Report
Nats Chief Executive Martin Rolfe has a week to submit a comprehensive report detailing the causes of the disruptions and the lessons learned.
While the possibility of a cyberattack is ruled out at this stage, authorities stated that safety measures will remain a priority.
Resignation Call from Airlines
Leading airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air called for Martin Rolfe to step down following the successive failures.
According to Cirium analyst data, approximately 2,100 flights were cancelled, including major hubs such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Stansted.
