Mladić, who remained a fugitive for a long time due to war crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, was captured and detained in 2011.
Following the trial process, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017.

Mladić was one of the most well-known figures of the conflicts that led to the deaths of more than 100,000 people and the displacement of over a million others.
Bosnian Serb troops under his command had taken control of a large portion of the country and besieged many cities, including the capital Sarajevo.
