Call for Global Climate Goals at the Istanbul Climate Finance Summit
Highlighting the financing gap in the fight against climate change, Minister Murat Kurum invited world leaders to focus on concrete investments for green transformation.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and COP31 President Murat Kurum emphasized the need for more decisive global action at the Climate Finance Summit held in Istanbul, drawing attention to the gap between the financing required to combat climate change and existing resources.
Financing Gap and Global Needs
Minister Murat Kurum announced that there is a global financing need of between 7.5 and 9 trillion dollars to combat climate change, while current resources remain at 1.9 trillion dollars.
Stating that the climate issue is not just an environmental problem, Kurum expressed that the matter also has dimensions related to finance, development, and technology.
Green Transformation and Investment Goals
Calling on world leaders to allocate more resources to clean energy and green industry, Kurum stated that they aim for the COP31 summit to be a turning point where promises are turned into investments.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that Turkey needs an investment of at least 80 billion dollars by 2035 to strengthen its energy infrastructure.
New Financial Mechanisms
Projects introduced within the scope of the summit, such as the 'Climate Implementation Bridge' and the 'Sustainable Urban Resilience Financing Facility (SURFF)', are intended to close the gap between climate goals and financing.
