Canada's Process to Become an Associate Member of the European Union Begins

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she supports opening the door for Canada to become the European Union's first "associate member" following trade tensions with the US.

Support for Associate Membership

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that she supports the proposals for Canada to become the first associate member of the European Union. In her annual speech in Strasbourg, she stated that this move is a response to fractures in the international rules-based system.

Canada and EU Relations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had expressed that they were seeking a unique alliance with the EU following collapsed trade talks with the US and imposed tariffs. Von der Leyen emphasized that this partnership is not against anyone and is built for mutual strength.

Areas of Cooperation

Von der Leyen noted that both sides view the world from the same perspective across many strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, critical minerals, batteries, cybersecurity, and economic security.

European Security Council Proposal

Taking current security risks into consideration, a proposal was submitted to establish a European Security Council that would include the UK, Ukraine, and Canada, among others.
