China Issues Warning Over Taiwan's Presence at Pacific Islands Forum

Qian Bo, China's special envoy for Pacific island affairs, stated that consequences would follow after Taiwan's participation in the opening ceremony of the annual Pacific Islands Forum held in Palau. This situation drew reactions from regional leaders as well as Australia and New Zealand.

The Forum and Taiwan's Participation

Democratically governed Taiwan participated in the opening ceremony of the annual Pacific Islands Forum held in Palau. China announced that it approached this situation with serious concerns.

Qian Bo, China's special envoy for Pacific island affairs, stated regarding Taiwan's participation that there would definitely be consequences and emphasized that the situation was inappropriate.

Regional Leaders' Reactions

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded to the Chinese envoy's remarks, stating that the decisions of the forum are determined by the Pacific Islands Forum itself, not by another country.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters also supported this view, clearly stating that the group does not take instructions from external countries.

Taiwan's Status in the Region

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed that they are honored to serve as a partner in the Pacific and to work together for prosperity and peace.

Lin Chia-lung was invited to the meetings held alongside the forum. Although Taiwan is not an official dialogue partner, it participates in the forum as a development partner.

Diplomatic Relations and the Summit

China has reduced the number of Pacific island nations with official ties to Taiwan over time, leaving only Palau, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands.

While the leaders of Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Kiribati did not attend the summit, ministers representing these countries were present at the meetings.
