Clash in the Netherlands: 34 People Detained
Following a fatal armed shootout in the early hours in the Dutch village of Overasselt, 34 people, including foreign nationals, were apprehended.
In an armed clash that broke out when masked and heavily armed individuals raided a house in the early hours in the village of Overasselt, near the German border in the Netherlands, one person lost his life and two police officers were injured.
Early Morning Armed Raid
Around 04:00 on Tuesday, a clash erupted with a masked and heavily armed group that arrived in front of a house in the village of Overasselt. A 51-year-old person, stated to be a security guard, lost his life at the scene.
Police Teams Targeted
Police teams dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports also became the target of gunfire. During the clash, two police officers were injured without life-threatening conditions.
Police spokesperson Jolanda Aalbers warned local residents to stay inside their homes, while reporting that numerous weapons, digital data storage devices, and vehicles were seized during the operations.
Drug Baron Connection
According to reports by local media outlets, the armed conflict is assessed to be linked to the criminal network of drug baron Jos Leijdekkers, known as the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands.
According to information reported by the Het Parool newspaper, the incident stemmed from a dispute over hundreds of kilograms of cocaine believed to have been stolen by Leijdekkers' gang.
Numerous Detentions and Investigation
A total of 34 people, including French, Belgian, and Algerian citizens, were detained by security forces. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn announced that the suspects face charges such as murder, manslaughter, and preparation for kidnapping.
Stating that an armed incident linked to a long-running dispute had also occurred in the same house last year, the prosecutor's office indicated that further arrests could be made.
