A high-ranking official of the ruling party in the Democratic Republic of Congo was murdered following a radio program in which she defended measures against the Ebola outbreak. The incident took place on Sunday in the city of Butembo, in North Kivu province.

Her House Was Looted and Set on Fire

Marie-Celestin Karondwa, deputy of the Butembo federal executive committee and party spokesperson for the UDPS party, was attacked by neighborhood residents after returning from the radio broadcast. The attackers beat the politician, looted her belongings, and set her house on fire.

Death Toll Rises in the Outbreak

Severely injured, Karondwa could not be saved despite all interventions at the hospital and lost her life. According to government data, thousands of people have been infected in the outbreak declared in May, and the toll is growing heavier.
