Costco nearly doubles cost of motor oil, limits purchases

Globally rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions have led retail giant Costco to nearly double motor oil prices and place quotas on weekly sales.

Price Increases and New Sales Limits

Costco raised the price of its popular Kirkland Signature full synthetic motor oil twin pack from about $30 to $58 over the past year.

Additionally, while customers are allowed to purchase a maximum of two boxes per week, a limit of five units per membership has also been applied to Mobil 1 branded products.

Developments in Global Oil Markets

GasBuddy head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan stated that the quantity limits in question are reasonable for normal drivers, but the price increases reflect global trends.

Attacks on pipelines in the Middle East, the Red Sea, and Saudi Arabia, as well as Russian refineries, are cited among the main reasons for the surge in oil prices.

Reflections on the Fuel Market

As of Monday morning, the barrel price of Brent crude surpassed $109, while gasoline and diesel prices also climbed according to AAA data.

Other major retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, and AutoZone have not yet made a statement on whether they will implement similar price increases or restrictions.
