The Alzheimer's Association of Turkey reported that the number of people living with Alzheimer's and dementia in the country is approximately 700,000. According to Ministry of Health data, the prevalence among individuals aged 65 and over is recorded at 5.5 percent.

Reasons for the Increase in Cases

Neurology specialists emphasize that the increase in cases is not solely due to aging. Factors such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, smoking, and sleep disorders are noted to wear down the brain.

Early Symptoms and Diagnosis

Alzheimer's, which can begin 15-20 years before forgetfulness appears, manifests itself with the impairment of the ability to remember recent events. Asking the same question repeatedly and misplacing items are among the warning signs.

Ways to Support Brain Health

Quality sleep, regular aerobic and resistance exercises, a Mediterranean-style diet, and social relationships support brain health. Furthermore, although the APOE4 gene increases risk, it is not considered a definitive destiny gene.

Developments in Diagnosis and Treatment

Blood tests approved in May 2025 and the use of artificial intelligence in imaging methods are significant for early diagnosis. While vaccine studies continue in treatment, new-generation drug formulations that can be administered subcutaneously at home are drawing attention.
