Cycling Students Warmly Welcomed in Kragujevac Ahead of Serbia's Elections
University students who completed a bicycle tour across the country ahead of early elections in Serbia were welcomed by thousands of people in Kragujevac.
Ahead of the early elections scheduled for October 25 in Serbia, university students touring the country by bicycle were welcomed with great enthusiasm by thousands of citizens in the city of Kragujevac.
Enthusiastic Welcoming Ceremony in Kragujevac
Arriving in Kragujevac, located about 100 kilometers south of the capital Belgrade, the students raised their bicycles in the air to greet the public. The crowd, meanwhile, waved Serbian flags to show their support for the students.
Wave of Protests Leading Up to the Election Process
The students had led a nearly two-year-long protest movement that began in the wake of a train station tragedy in Serbia that resulted in 16 deaths. These protests ranked among the events that shook the ruling populist leader the most.
Carrying the Constitution for the Rule of Law
During the ten days before arriving in Kragujevac, the students pedaled across the country carrying copies of the Serbian Constitution with them to draw attention to the rule of law.
The Opposition Student List
The public danced and sang to support the independent "Student List," composed of academics and experts, running against the ruling party. Ilija Srdanovic, a doctor and professor heading the list, emphasized that the country should not have a single boss.
