Danger on Flight Averted Through Intervention of Passengers and Crew
Following a cockpit incident on a plane carrying approximately 180 passengers, a safe landing was executed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
During flydubai flight FZ1073, the intervention of passengers, off-duty pilots, and a dentist averted a major disaster during an incident in the cockpit.
Sudden Descent During Flight
The flydubai flight carrying approximately 180 passengers executed a sudden dive, losing 17,400 feet of altitude in less than two minutes along its route. The aircraft subsequently recovered and landed safely in the northwestern Saudi city of Tabuk.
Conflict in the Cockpit
It was reported that a passenger and a crew member on board entered the cockpit and subdued the individual attempting to sabotage the systems. Following the incident, an injured person and bloodstains were observed inside the cabin, and passengers stated that the pilot was attacked with a knife.
Intervention of Passengers and Crew
Two off-duty pilots sitting at the back of the aircraft, alert passengers who removed the attacker from the cockpit, and a dentist who treated the injured Indian Captain Pilot Smit Machchhar played critical roles in preventing disaster. Another crew member ensured the aircraft remained balanced.
Emergency Signals and Route Change
According to Flightradar24 data, after the 17,400-foot drop, the aircraft transmitted emergency and unlawful interference signals. Reversing its route near the Saudi-Jordanian border, the plane prompted Israeli fighter jets to briefly scramble, though these jets returned without entering Saudi airspace.
