A senior official of the ruling party in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was beaten to death on Sunday and her home was set on fire following a radio broadcast explaining preventive measures against the Ebola outbreak.

Attack After Radio Program

Marie-Celestin Karondwa, deputy of the federal executive committee for the Union for Democracy and Social Progress party in Butembo, was attacked after leaving a radio broadcast.

It was reported that the attackers beat Karondwa, stole her belongings, and set her house on fire, while the politician lost her life due to the injuries she sustained.

Details and Motive of the Attack

Who carried out the attack, how many people participated, or the exact motivation behind the attack was not initially clear.

Party officials stated that Karondwa was an innocent victim because she advocated for the existence of the Ebola virus and the threat it posed to the public.

Violence Against Healthcare Workers

This incident occurred as a continuation of a series of attacks against healthcare workers, which experts state stem from misinformation and distrust regarding the disease.

In an attack carried out by armed individuals in the Beni region on Saturday, at least one person lost their life while numerous people were injured.

Course of the Ebola Outbreak

According to DRC Ministry of Health data, the current outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus is recorded as the largest and most lethal outbreak in the country's history.

While thousands of people have been infected in the outbreak announced in May, conflicts and interruptions in aid are among the factors accelerating the spread of the disease.
