World-renowned feminist activist, journalist, and author Gloria Steinem has passed away at the age of 92. Her foundation announced that Steinem continued to work for equality until the very last moment of her life.

Life and Childhood Years

Born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 25, 1934, Gloria Steinem had a difficult childhood. It is known that she was unable to attend school regularly until she turned 12.

The Process of Meeting Activism

After completing her university education, she went to India in the late 1950s on a research fellowship. During the two years she spent there, she supported village women in organizing non-violent protests against government policies, and this experience ignited her interest in grassroots activism.

Journalism Career and Big Breakthrough

She moved to New York in the early 1960s to begin her career as a freelance writer. Her biggest breakthrough in her career came with an investigative journalism piece exposing the working conditions in a Playboy club.

Ms. Magazine and Major Awards

After working as a columnist for New York Magazine, she founded Ms. magazine in 1972. Steinem, who kept her distance from marriage for many years, married David Bale in 2000; her husband passed away three years later due to brain lymphoma. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, by then-US President Barack Obama.
