First Road Bridge Between Russia and North Korea Opened
The new border infrastructure, deepening strategic relations between the two countries, aims to boost trade and tourism in the region.
Russia and North Korea have inaugurated the first road bridge connecting the two countries over the Tumen River. Participating in the opening ceremony via video conference, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin stated that the new crossing will contribute to trade, tourism, and employment.
Location and Structure of the Bridge
Connecting Khasan in Russia's Far East with Tumangang in North Korea, the one-kilometer-long structure holds the distinction of being the first road bridge between the two countries. The new bridge is located right next to the existing 'Friendship Bridge' railway, which went into service in 1959 following the Korean War.
Opening Ceremony and Statements
Attending Monday's opening ceremony via video link, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin stated that cross-border transport infrastructure will support trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation, as well as tourism.
Construction Process and History
According to reports from the Russian state news agency TASS, construction of the bridge began in April of last year. This move was implemented following the agreement reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea in 2024.
Deepening Relations and Security Concerns
While relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have significantly strengthened since 2022, Ukrainian human rights groups have expressed concerns that the new bridge could be used as a military logistics corridor.
