Published for the 20th time this year by the World Economic Forum, the Global Gender Gap 2026 report measures changes in gender inequality across four key areas in 145 countries.
According to the study, which examines economic participation, education, health, and political empowerment, the global gender gap showed a 0.4 percent increase compared to last year.
Political and Economic Representation Issues
Although women's empowerment in the political sphere has made progress since 2006, these gains have seen a regression since 2016.
Women who manage to secure senior management positions in the business world remain underrepresented at the levels holding the greatest economic and political impact.
Rates in Management and Technology
While women make up 19.1 percent of all chief executive positions, only one-tenth of the ministerial roles undertaken are considered to have high impact.
In the field of artificial intelligence, women make up less than one-fifth of engineers and are underrepresented at every level of artificial intelligence companies.
Leading Countries in Gender Equality
Iceland maintained its title as the country with the highest measured gender equality for the 17th consecutive year, reaching a rate of 93 percent.
This country was followed by Finland with 87.2 percent and Norway with 85.7 percent, while Australia entered the top 10 list of countries for the first time this year.
