Aim and Scope of the Project
Tokyo-based fusion company Helical Fusion announced that it has been conditionally selected for a project aimed at demonstrating fusion energy production in Japan in the 2030s. This development was announced within the framework of the country's national strategy for nuclear fusion development.
Helix Program and Phases
Founded in October 2021, the company targets commercial fusion energy with its Helix Program, which is based on research into the Helical Stellarator design. Within the scope of the program, demonstrations of high-temperature superconducting magnet and blanket components will be completed by the mid-2020s.
Difference Between Stellarator and Tokamak
A stellarator fusion reactor offers a different structure from tokamak reactors, which have a uniform torus shape. While tokamaks are designed in a ring shape, stellarators twist this shape into a figure-eight, overcoming the problems of the magnets confining the plasma.
Financial Support and Expectations
It is projected that a total of approximately 60 billion Japanese yen in grants will be provided to all selected project operators until the end of February 2029. The official selection and grant amounts are expected to be announced at a later date.
