The iconic 27.4-meter-high Hōlei Sea Arch, with a history of approximately 550 years located in Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park region, collapsed and disappeared into the Pacific Ocean.

Collapse Process and Timeframe

According to the statement made by the National Park Service, the exact time of the structure's collapse is unknown. While the arch was still present on the coast on September 23, it was determined to have completely disappeared during checks on September 27.

Geological Instability and Past Warnings

It was stated that the rocky structure along the coastline had been showing signs of instability for many years. Park officials had warned in 2021 that the structure could eventually collapse due to this situation.

Impact of Earthquakes and Storm

It is estimated that the arch collapsed while the park was temporarily closed due to Tropical Storm Nolo. Additionally, it was stated that earthquakes occurring during the 2018 Kīlauea volcano eruption also damaged the rocks.

Tourist Importance

Located at the end of the Chain of Craters Road on the island of Hawaii, this natural rock formation was known as one of the most frequented spots for tourists visiting the region.
