France rocked by student riots as hundreds arrested, violence spreads nationwide

More than 625 people have been arrested within two days during violent student protests organized across France due to staff shortages, budget cuts, and worsening conditions in schools. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu held an emergency meeting as the events affected hundreds of high schools and universities.

Causes and Spread of the Protests

Protests launched by students due to staff shortages, run-down buildings, overcrowded classrooms, and budget cuts spread nationwide. On Thursday alone, more than 350 high schools and about 30 university campuses were affected by this mobilization.

Injuries and Security Measures

Since the beginning of the events, 119 students and school staff, as well as 83 police officers and gendarmes, have been injured. School principals were attacked and injured in Marseille, Rouen, and Petit-Quevilly, while police used tear gas in many cities and authorities warned against urban violence and arson attempts.

Political Impacts and Reactions

Coinciding with the budget cuts announced by the government, the protests turned into a political flashpoint ahead of the presidential election scheduled for next May. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that some individuals traveled between schools to incite violence, while Education Minister Edouard Geffray called for a transition to remote learning.
