Hurricane Strength and Location
Hurricane Nolo carries the potential to become a major hurricane as it increases wind speed while moving toward the islands. The center of the storm is located approximately 185 miles off the southernmost point of Hawaii.
The storm, with maximum sustained winds reaching 105 miles per hour, is expected to increase its impact on the islands throughout the weekend.
Expected Rainfall Amounts
Meteorological officials reported that rainfall amounts in some parts of the Big Island could range from 15 to 25 inches.
Heavy rainfall is also expected on the island of Maui, which officials stated could lead to life-threatening floods and landslides.

National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan emphasized that the public must take shelter in safe places and stay away from dangerous flood environments.
Big Island Mayor Kimo Alameda asked citizens to complete their preparations and closely follow official warnings.
Emergency Measures
The Governor of Hawaii declared a state of emergency, deploying more than 230 Hawaii National Guard members, and schools were closed in some areas.
Relief organizations and teams in the regions built barriers to prevent potential floods and delivered emergency aid supplies to the islands.
