Assoc. Prof. Dr. Attila Önmez, Internal Medicine Specialist at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, pointed out that influenza can progress more severely in individuals aged 65 and over, leading to serious complications including pneumonia.

Risk Group and Advanced Age

The World Health Organization evaluates individuals over the age of 65 in the risk group regarding severe illness and complications related to influenza. As age advances, the body's response to infections may change and the disease can turn into more severe conditions.

Interaction with Chronic Diseases

In individuals with heart disease, diabetes, chronic lung or kidney disease, influenza can negatively affect the control of existing ailments. In such cases, the deterioration of the general condition should be closely monitored.

Symptoms and Evaluation

Influenza may not always manifest itself with a high fever. The absence of fever does not mean that the disease is mild; loss of appetite, noticeable fatigue, and a decrease in daily activities are also important signs of infection.

Vaccination and Protection Methods

Due to the change of influenza viruses over time and the decrease in vaccine protection, the annual flu vaccine is of great importance. The vaccine contributes to reducing the risk of severe illness and complications.
